PASSING OUT CIGARS

21 November 2003

It's here! It's here! It's here!!!

It's a bouncing baby....computer.

I called the computer place yesterday and she said that "a computer had just come in and she'd call me back and let me know if it was mine. With all the delays that I've been thru, I was convinced that it would be another disappointment.

But no. She seemed almost as excited as I was..."It's yours!," she said.

Naturally that didn't mean "come pick it up right now."

There was still work to be done--my old hard drive to be installed so I don't lose any information and didn't have to do a time-consuming transfer of programs and files (to say nothing of it adding an additional 20 gigs of hard drive space!).

"It should be ready for you in the morning," she said.

Be still my heart.

First thing in the morning she called. "I spoke too soon," she said. (I sighed mentally...it wouldn't be today after all...). "When I said it would be ready this morning, I didn't realize that there was still some more work to be done. Lynn is working on it right now..." "So when will it be ready?" I asked, resigned to her saying "next week."

But she didn't.

"Oh, it should be ready later this morning."

Whoopie!

I decided I'd give them until noon and if I hadn't heard, I'd call. I had an appointment with Cindy at 1:45 anyway. So at 11:30 (too impatient to wait till 12), I called.

"I'm not trying to be a pest," I apologized (at this point I didn't want to do anything to alienate anybody)... She interrupted me. "Actually, I was just getting ready to call you," she said.

The computer was finished and they were just writing up the bill and I could come and get it.

Of course, first I had to make a stop at Cindy's, get a crown put on, and have my teeth cleaned, but I had lovely thoughts to think while I was sitting there and as soon as they finished, I was out of there in a flash and off to get the computer.

They were very helpful and carried it all out to the car for me, because I didn't know if I could deal with it, with my shoulder, you know.

Walt's been out of town all week, but when I got home, his suitcase was just inside the front door (in my formerly clean hallway...grrr... I'm just kidding!) so I knew he was home.

I called him at his office and we agreed that I should wait until he got home and not risk carrying the computer myself.

So I sat here and looked at my desk. And I tapped my foot. And I thought lovely thoughts about how I'd spend my evening. And then I decided that well maybe I'd be able to disconnect the old-old-old desktop I'd installed to get me over the hump (which stopped working three days ago...sigh...)

If I dropped it it wouldn't be any great loss, since I'd just be tossing it anyway.

Other than nearly dropping it on the dog, who refused to move out of the spot where I was going to put it, the move went OK. I'm slowly learning how to let my good arm take the bulk of the weight of things I'm picking up. Good for me.

Then I looked at that big empty spot on the desk. And I thought about that lovely computer sitting in the car. And I thought about how easy it had been to move the old computer.

What the hell.

The Dell is significantly smaller (and thus lighter) than the old computer and I moved it in with no trouble whatsoever.

So I'm spending my evening learning the new computer, learning XP, figuring out how to make my old files work on the new computer, and all that "getting to know you" stuff that you do with a new computer.

I've made an appointment with my ISP to come out on Monday and reinstall the DSL line. Then with my 2.79 GHz, 512 MB RAM and 140 gigs worth of hard drive, I should be able to make it through the next year without problem!!!

It's a lovely day.
