"A Face of Alzheimers"
October is Breast Cancer
12 October 2005
Ahhh...what would I do without Bozoette and her quizzes? Here's one she posted recently.
1. Name someone with the same birthday as you?
Michael Jordan, Huey Newton, Hal Holbrook, Brenda Fricker, Chaim Potok, Kathleen Freeman, Margaret Truman, Denise Richards and (oh horror) Paris Hilton. It is also the birthday of Marjorie Lawrence, who was an Australian Soprano. They made a movie of her life, called Interrupted Melody and the movie made me decide to become an opera singer (despite the fact that I did not have that sort of voice). I took to hitting very high notes while I was doing the dishes at night, totally driving my mother insane!
February 17 is also Championship Crab Races Day and the anniversary of the first day that they canned sardines.
2. Where was your first kiss?
You'd think a girl would remember a thing like that, wouldn't you? But I don't. I remember that it was with my first boyfriend, Bill Farrington (a pretty easy guess, since I dated him exclusively for 3 years!), but the details have long since escaped me.
3. Have you ever seriously vandalized someone elses property?
4. Have you ever hit someone of the opposite sex?
You'll have to ask Ned and Tom. Seems to me they received a few well-timed smacks to the lower regions on occasion. Nobody big enough to hit back.
5. Have you ever sung in front of a large number of people?
Not solo. I sang in choruses all through high school and college and the closest I came to a solo was a duet when our choir had no alto soloist for a Mozart Mass. We were known as the "Benedictus girls," because we had a brief solo at the start of the Benedictus.
6. What do you order at Starbucks?
I don't generally go to Starbucks, I go to Peet's to buy coffee beans. I don't order their coffee because it's too strong. That said, however, I have been to Starbucks occasionally and I usually get some frou frou drink with whipped cream on it. (It's about time for Pumpkin latte again, isn't it?)
7. What is your biggest mistake?
8. Have you ever hurt yourself on purpose?
Not in the "cutting" sense of the word, but I suppose that overeating can be a form of "hurting yourself on purpose."
9. Say something totally random about yourself.
I type fast.
10. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity?
Yes! When I was in high school and at the height of my Judy Garland craze, I was walking up Van Ness Ave. in San Francisco and a guy came racing out of a car dealership yelling "Hey!" When I turned around, he looked disappointed and said "You look just like Judy Garland."
11. Do you still watch kiddy movies or tv shows?
Not really TV shows (since the kids outgrew Sesame Street and moved out so I didn't have to watch cartoon shows any more), but I do enjoy kid movies, especially made by Disney. (I still cry at Bambi and Dumbo)
12. Did you have braces?
Nope. In fact, when I went to a new dentist for the first time, at age 12, he took me up several flights in his building to an orthodontist to show him what perfectly straight teeth I had, without braces.
13. Are you comfortable with your height?
I've always wished I were a little shorter--not a lot, but just an inch or two. Of course, now that I'm older, I am an inch or two shorter than I was back in my younger years!
14. Do you speak any other languages?
Not fluently. I was a French major and I suppose it would come back to me if I needed it. I also picked up some conversational Portuguese but would have a difficult time holding a conversation any more.
15. Have you ever been to a tanning salon?
No. I've never been into tanning, which, as we now know, was pretty smart of me, even though I didn't plan it to be.
16. What magazines do you read?
I don't really read magazines, though I did just subscribe to Dog Fancier and have started reading that. At various times I've also read Prevention, Weight Watchers, Rosie, O, and at the gym would read Newsweek, Time, The New Yorker or People (though I hate to admit that).
17. Have you ever ridden in a limo?
No, but my kids have. There's something not fair about that!
18. Has anyone you were really close to passed away?
Well, I'm sure we all know the answer to that one. My sister died in 1971, Gilbert died in 1986, David died in 1996 and Paul in 1999. People have been put on notice that NOBODY gets to die now until I do. I have first dibs.
19. Do you watch mtv?
Never. I remember when MTV first started and I thought it was the dumbest thing ever to sit around just watching "records." I predicted it would never last.
20. Whats something that really annoys you?
Prejudice, injustice, discrimination, unkindness.
21. Whats something you really like?
22. Do you like Michael Jackson?
I did. When he was 5. Before he became a caricature of himself. I even sort of liked his music around the time of "Beat It," when Vince (from Malaysia) was living here and was a big Michael Jackson fan. But now? I think he's a very tragic figure who has wasted his life and his talents. As for all the charges against him, I won't make comment because I don't like to judge based on gossip. I just think he's definitely weird.
23. Can you dance?
N.O. I am uncomfortable in my body, and I've always felt like a klutz on the dance floor, even when I was a normal weight. I would love to like to dance, but I hate it and try to avoid it at all costs.
24. Whats the latest you have ever stayed up?
Uh...all night? Many times in times of stress I've been up all night (e.g., the night David died; the night Paul died). Under normal circumstances, I've been known to stay up as late as 3 or 4 a.m, but not usually.
25. Have you ever been rushed by an ambulance into the emergency room?
I'm not sure if "rushed" is the proper term, but I did get that famous ride in the ambulance after my bike accident.
